New Animatic

Here is the new animatic for my new animation idea. (Note that the music that is with this clip is not the final choice, it's just there as to what the clip is gonna be like. IT'S NOT THE CHOSEN MUSIC.)

New Storyboard and a Few Extra's

Here the the new storyboard for the new idea I have.
Note that this is a sequence storyboad that will connect well with the right music for being a slight 'music video' like "Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel." (Link).

The title is still the same, and I am reusing the characters that I was gonna use for the other idea for this one.

Nightmare Character.

The main character in the story known as 'Dan.'

'Dream Dan' as a character of 'Steamboat Wille.'

The Idea

It should start off as a normal day showing in the life of ‘Dan’ as he does his animation skills, then it’ll soon go downhill in sadness and frustration which clearly shows in his work then his nightmares begins to show of a evil creature and possibly add a wall to symbolize the barrier between communication. Then a brainstorm appears clearing the doubt and frustration making Dan work harder and better then slowly the dream forms around him as he looks like a character from ‘Steamboat Willie’ which then ends.

New Animation Structure

I’ve decided to change my structure of my work of instead of having a simple narrative story where it would only become plain and possible dull, I thought that I would try and make it into a more meaning animation.

As my tutor Sean Batkin suggested, I should try a sort of animated music video that shows the actions and thoughts instead of just wording them. One of the video’s he suggested I should look up is Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel. (Link)

So I with this idea I thought that using the characters that I already done, make myself as being centre of the frame and using the space around my head and shoulders to express the feeling of my thoughts and reactions. With that find the right music to go with the animation, probably either find something to do with disability like autism, or make a new soundtrack. (The music would have to be either with lyrics or without.)

Backgrounds Part 1

The back ground that I am doing are using real life photo's that would be traced for the animation that I am doing.

May decided to make it darker.

May need to redesign this with some help.

Character Designs; Present Day Character.

I began creating my preset day character basing it on photo's of my self for guidance.

From there i had ago a creating the character in color using the past rough sketches I had.
As the result, it turned out alright.

However i was told that if i would do this sort of drawing in my animation, i would not be able to fully complete it on time that I wanted. so my tutor, Paul Sinclair, decided to try it a different way using a animation style that involved just using photo's in the animation. (Ex; Angela Anaconda see link.)

After seeing that animation i decided to base it on that, but without the photo's and just with the drawings.
A few Skeleton deigns for my present day character.

Character Designs; Nightmare Character.

Hear are my rough drawings for my nightmare character.

I starter with this one showing the evil smile and the shape eyes and claws, but i found out that the mouth didn't look right open, the eyes not right, and having the character in a dream bubble didn't bring out the nightmare character out as a nightmare.

From there I drew this, i tried it without the claws to see if it would work. As you can see it turned out alright with the mouth and the eyes, so I carried on drawing this a few times to get it right, this time with the claws as you can see below.

I apologize if this image is on it's side.

When i was done getting the right character I went ahead and added some color to the character to see what he would look like, when I did using the basic paint tool i decided to add something a bit more darker to bring out the character using 'Photoshop'.
Before. After.

When that was done i thought about how my character would appear in the animation, so i did a few ideas. (Seen below)
And from that I chose the bottom one.

Character Designs; Dream Character.

I began creating my dream character that was going to be used in my animation, but I wasn't quite sure which clothing or design hight my character would be, so I experimented while creating the past me.

I used this photo as a souse.

Then from there I began making my character.

And after a few redo' i was able to make my dream character.

Research into animated feature films about autism.

Funnily enough I could not find many. In my dissertation, I focused on Disney like many of the major companies, including Disney they have not been brave enough.

I have included some research on some of the information I have found.

1) The transporters “Animation DVD to help children with autism recognise human emotions.”
2) A is for Autism.
3) Creature discomforts.
4) Simon Mc Keown: motion disabled.
5) John Stienback “Of Mice and Men.”

Rough Animatic

This is the first rough animatic for my animation. The timing and a few sounds effects are on it, but not the voice over.

The improvments that I need to for the finald animatic would be to do two versions of it, one with subtitles, and one with none. The reason why I'm making two is becasue I wanted to experement to see which one would be better to view, and if it works right i could be using either one or the other.

Character Designs amd Reseach

Date: Done on 19/07/09.

Copyright.

My final scenes were to include a small scene by Walt Disney’s “Steamboat Willie.”

The reason behind this, is I have been influenced by Disney’s work, his drive, ambitions and work have inspired me to be an animator. I was hopeful that I could use this image to promote autism.

I wrote a letter. Their response was disappointing and I was unable to use this image. So I had to think of another way to finish the film positively. My response is to create a character of myself, based on the character of that era.

I have placed myself on a boat similar to Mickey Mouse, however this boat represents my own particular journey into “Life and hopeful employment” as an animator.
Steamboat Willie Character

Because of the disappointment from Walt Disney Studios I am unable to use Mickey Mouse and/or Walt Disney, so I had to come up with a character similar but different.

I have kept the character in mono-chrome to look as similar to the characters of the 1930’s of which influenced the world of animation.

I have focused my work on a disability as seen in my dissertation, this topic does not like to be tackled by major animation companies which again supports my argument that Disney does not reflect today’s society.
